It wasn’t a big job, but I replaced the compressor capacitor and fan for our home a/c. The hardest part was tracking down parts on a holiday weekend.

Share my joy! The house is getting cold!

Some non-car related pics:

Old, bulging capacitor with new non-bulging capacitor.

New fan installed and running!

So, where’d you find the parts?

Well done! Our 1.5 year old air conditioner went out a month ago when it was near triple digits here. We called out the repair guy and it turned out to be the capacitor too. Unfortunately since I’ve never had central air until I moved in to this house I had no clue. The part was covered under warranty but the weekend labor cost me $100. Now that I know we’re going to keep a spare around since a replacement is like $10 even if the AC company tried to charge me $40 before I pointed out the warranty situation.

My son and I are active in Scouts, so I activated the Scout network to see if someone knew an a/c guy. Someone did. He sold me the parts out of his truck at something less than retail, more than wholesale.

Before that, I called on of the local companies who quoted me $600 for the repair. That's more than $450 in labor for an hour of work.

Thanks! A spare cap is handy thing to have around. But it wouldn't have helped me today since the fan motor was shot too.
